Elon Musk’s X Platform Bans More Than 200,000 Accounts in India for Sharing Inappropriate Content
Elon Musk-led X Corp banned a record 2,31,215 accounts in India between December 26 and January 25, mainly for promoting child sexual abuse and non-consensual nudity.
The microblogging platform, which is going through a storm under Musk, also shut down 1,945 accounts for promoting terrorism on its platform in the country.
In total, X banned 2,33,160 accounts in the country in the reporting period. In its monthly report under the new IT rules 2021, X said it received 2,525 complaints from users in India during the same period through the complaint redressal mechanisms.
In addition, X handled 40 complaints complaining about account suspension.
“We reversed 9 of these account suspensions after reviewing the details of the situation. The rest of the reported accounts remain suspended,” the company said.
“During this reporting period, we received 19 requests related to general questions about accounts,” it added.
Most complaints from India were about circumvention (967), followed by abuse/harassment (684), sensitive adult content (363) and hateful activity (313).
X banned 2,27,600 accounts in India between November 26 and December 25.
The microblogging platform also destroyed 2,032 accounts for promoting terrorism on its platform in the country.
Meanwhile, a new report from the Tech Transparency Project (TTP) says X provides premium paid services to two leaders of a US-designated terrorist group and several other government-sanctioned organizations.
The report identified more than a dozen X-accounts for US-sanctioned entities with a blue checkmark, which requires the purchase of a premium subscription.
