In recent years, the field of artificial intelligence (AI) has experienced significant advancements. The introduction of OpenAI’s ChatGPT in November 2022 has sparked a revolution in AI chatbots, leading to major tech companies such as Google, Microsoft, Tencent, and Apple developing their own conversational chatbots. However, controversy has arisen around a particular AI chatbot that gained immense popularity during the summer for providing explicit content, setting it apart from other chatbots. What is Janitor AI?
Janitor AI is an AI chatbot for forums that works with ChatGPT. Unlike ChatGPT, Google Bard, and other conversational AI chatbots, Janitor AI is a non-safe-for-work (NSFW) chatbot that allows people to chat with user-created chatbot personalities. It was created by Jan Zoltkowski, who is currently working as a rapid engineer in San Francisco at a hackathon, according to a report from Semafor.
It features multiple personal personalities such as Miles Morales from Earth 42, a mob boss, Simon “Ghost” Riley from Task Force 141, Kratos from God of War, Deadpool and more. It also features female characters like Freya from God of War, Gwen Stacy, anime characters and more. Users have created personalities based on books, movies, TV shows, and even video games! Chat prompts allow users to define the AI personality’s upbringing, journey so far, personality traits, likes and dislikes, and more.
Janitor AI quickly gained popularity over the summer when it started trending on TikTok and Reddit. Users shared videos of their conversations with personalities created on the AI platform, and some even formed relationships with AI boyfriends. So far, more than 2.5 billion messages have been exchanged on the platform.
Controversy over Janitor AI
Janitor AI has recently been in controversy for even allowing NSFW speech on its platform, which is not allowed in other AI chatbots. According to the report, one conversation on the platform with an AI werewolf boyfriend named Milo Grayson read, “You’re so damn hot,” he mumbled and kissed her neck again. I could fill you with my seed over and over again.”
Interestingly, OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, has sought to crack down on chatbots developed on its platform that offer NSFW features, issuing a cease-and-desist letter to the owners of Janitor AI in July, after which the platform was shut down. Users then took to Reddit to express their frustration. One user wrote. “IT’S BEEN 3 MONTHS WITHOUT AN AI-DICK”.
Despite the disconnection, users have found new solutions to access the platform. According to the report, Janitor AI can still be used by registering as an OpenAI developer, which costs money.
