In February 2024, 500,000 Accounts in India Banned for Policy Violations
Elon Musk-led X Corp banned a record 5,06,173 accounts in India between January 26 and February 25, mainly for promoting child sexual abuse and non-consensual nudity.
The platform, which is accelerating under Musk, also destroyed 1,982 accounts for promoting terrorism on its platform in the country.
In total, X banned 5,08,155 accounts in the country during the reporting period. In its monthly report under the new IT rules 2021, X said it received 14,421 complaints from users in India during the same period through its complaint redressal mechanisms.
In addition, X handled 41 complaints complaining about account suspension. “We reversed one of these account freezes after reviewing the details of the situation. The rest of the reported accounts remain frozen,” the company said.
“We received 71 requests related to general questions about accounts during this reporting period,” it added.
Most complaints from India were about evasion (7,510), followed by promoting suicide or self-harm (3,785), hostile behavior (1,395) and abuse/harassment (746).
X banned 2,31,215 accounts in India between December 26 and January 25. The microblogging platform also suspended 1,945 accounts for promoting terrorism during this period.
