‘Final Fantasy XVI’ Breaks Record with Over 3 Million Copies Sold
Since its release on June 22, Final Fantasy XVI, a PS5 exclusive with a darker tone, has sold over three million units. This impressive sales figure is even more notable considering the game’s limited availability on a single console. In comparison, Final Fantasy XV, a multi-platform title available on both PS4 and Xbox One, sold five million copies during its launch week in 2016.
Square Enix says this three million figure represents both digital and physical sales worldwide. This falls slightly short of the recent FF7 version, which sold 3.5 million units in its first three days of availability. The remake was once again available for multiple consoles. It’s also worth noting that the PS4 never had the availability issues that the PS5 did, so the install base was much higher (although that’s slowly changing.)

All of these numbers pale in comparison to Nintendo’s crown jewel, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, which sold a massive 10 million copies in just three days. However, JRPGs have typically struggled to achieve sales figures in line with open-world adventures, especially in the West.
Positive reviews and word of mouth likely led to impressive sales figures for Final Fantasy XVI. In the title review, we praised the stunning environments, impressive bosses and nuanced combat system.
