Forget eSIM, Android phones will soon support iSIM: what it means
Android phones are rapidly evolving in the market, not only in terms of performance and download speeds, but also in how you can access networks on them. For many years we have used physical SIM cards (even two) to make calls and use data networks.
Gradually, the trend shifted to the eSIM card, which prevented the replacement of the physical SIM card in the phone and allowed phone manufacturers to free up space in their design.
And now Qualcomm is ready for the next smartphone solution called Integrated SIM or iSIM. It says that iSIM is more powerful than regular SIM cards and even eSIM.
According to the chipmaker, the iSIM is integrated into the chipset, which means you have more room for features like better speakers or even adding another motor for vibration. Qualcomm and Thales are driving iSIM technology by presenting its use case in a modified version of the Snapdragon 8 Gen chipset.
It’s 100 times smaller than the nano SIM that most phones use today. Industry reports say iSIM is being heralded as the future of mobile networking. More than 300 million iSIM phones are estimated to be delivered by 2030.
Apple has changed the trend with the US iPhone 14 model, which comes without the usual SIM card slot. It’s interesting to see the market develop so quickly, especially with eSIM still not catching up. People in countries like India have problems getting eSIM connections which are limited to certain operators. We look forward to seeing how iSIM integrates into the market with Qualcomm providing the technology through its flagship chipset. But if the feature becomes mainstream, the chipmaker will have to bring it to mid-range phones as well.
