Fortnite returns to iOS thanks to Nvidias cloud gaming web app
Nvidia has joined other cloud game providers in bypassing the Apple App Store and launching a mobile web app version of the GeForce NOW service. GeForce NOW is available in beta now and its more than 5 million registered users can use the app on Safari on iPhone or iPad and play the games they want. Including Fortnite.
According to reports, Nvidia is also planning to expand support for its desktop version of GeForce NOW based on Chrome, which only works on Chromebooks now, to more platforms like Android, Linux, and Mac from here. the first quarter of 2021.
GeForce NOW is currently mainly distributed through Mac and PC apps, as well as dedicated apps on Android and the Nvidia Shield streaming box.
The main benefit of GeForce NOW, currently, is that Epic Games’ Fortnite can once again be played on Apple devices. Although this involves a slightly boring workaround and may be actually playable once Epic and Nvidia fix a few issues, it does come back.
The PC version of Fortnite is available through GeForce NOW, thanks to the partnership of Nvidia and Epic around cloud gaming which allows Epic Game Store titles to be distributed via the Nvidia platform. However, Fortnite is not yet ready for the iOS version of GeForce NOW, and Epic and Nvidia are working hard to bring improved touch controls to the game.
Along with the great team at Epic Games, we are working to enable a touch version of Fortnite, which will delay the game’s availability. While the GeForce Now library is best experienced on mobile with a gamepad, touch is to learn how over 100 million Fortnite players built, fought and danced to win the Victory Royale, Phil Eisler, chief of Nvidia GeForce Now, wrote in the company’s blog.
We look forward to delivering a Fortnite mobile cloud streaming experience powered by GeForce NOW. Members will soon be able to search for the game on iOS Safari, Eisler added.
Mobile Fortnite players who were unable to access the game will soon be able to do so on Epic’s PC storefront. They will be able to log in with their account and find the game on the iOS version of GeForce Now. Gamers who already access Fortnite on mobile, console, and PC have likely already linked their accounts and should have no problem syncing their data between platforms.
News of Fortnite’s return to iOS via GeForce NOW was first reported by the BBC earlier this month ahead of Nvidia’s official announcement.
