Here’s What Google CEO Sundar Pichai Said About Anticipated Layoffs This Year
Google has laid off thousands of workers in recent months, and the bad news is that in 2024 more jobs are likely to be cut at the search giant. The company’s executive has announced the significant changes in an internal memo, which The Verge cites in this report. “We have ambitious goals and are investing in our big priorities this year. The reality is that to create the capacity for this investment, we have to make tough choices,” the memo quoted Pichai as saying.
Pichai talked about the need to streamline the company’s headcount, but balked at using the term layoff, suggesting instead the need to streamline and eliminate, which is a nicer way of telling people you’re not needed at the company.
Google had a significant layoff period in 2023, but Pichai is quick to point out that 2024 won’t reach that scale, and not every team is at risk of layoffs. He also mentioned in the memo that the 2024 Google layoffs will be about “removing layers to simplify performance and increase speed in some areas.”
The company is one of many that are designing their lives and working with artificial intelligence in their systems. Google recently announced the Bard and Gemini LLMs, which are expected to be a solid part of the structure, which basically prevents the need for more people and the current ones can be replaced by artificial intelligence, which industry analysts have been warning about since last year.
In fact, earlier this week Google announced another round of layoffs from its ad sales team. The leaked Internet memo from Pichai’s report clearly shows that companies need to reorganize their workforce, which unfortunately comes at the cost of losing people.
