Google will no longer support these short links by 2025: Learn about the impact and next steps for users

Google is discontinuing support for links created with the Google URL Shortener starting with ‘https://goo.gl/‘ after August 25, 2025. This means that clicking on these links will no longer redirect you to the intended page.

However, this should not be a concern for many as Google officially shut down the URL shortener in 2019. However, those who still rely on shortened links should stop using them.

“The time has come to shut down the serving portion of Google URL Shortener,” Google said, announcing the end of support in a blog post.

Short links are a convenient way to share links. They not only consume fewer tokens, but are also more aesthetically pleasing when shared on platforms such as social media.

End of goo.gl links: What’s going on?

From August 23, 2024, Google will start reminding existing users that that link will no longer work after August 25, before they can visit the destination page. The frequency of this reminder will increase as the closing date of August 25, 2025 approaches.

After the closing date, all short links will show a 404 response.

Google also notes that if you have used 302 redirects, the intermediate page (reminder) may cause loading problems. Therefore, it is recommended to move as soon as possible.

Are there any options?

In 2019, Google stopped supporting URL Shortener and has since recommended users to switch to Firebase links. These are dynamic links to access either Android or iOS and always download the compatible version from the website. This makes optimization easier and avoids loads of links for each platform. Other popular solutions include Bitly, Rebrandly, TinyURL, Short.io and others.
