Google Meet Enhances Picture-in-Picture Functionality
Google Meet, which competes with Zoom and Microsoft Teams, has received an update that enhances the usefulness of its picture-in-picture (PiP) feature. The new controls enable users to multitask during meetings while still being present and actively participating in video conferences, as per Google’s Workspace Update blog post.
When the picture-in-picture window is open, there is now a control that allows you to “raise your hand”, use PiP during a meeting chat, enable and disable subtitles, resize the picture-in-picture view more efficiently, and use flexible layouts. , the company said. Google shows exactly how it works in the GIF below, as a user composes an email while being able to see their colleagues and stay present in a video chat. If you need to do a thing, you can still raise your hand and use other controls.
It’s a big change from the previous version, which offered limited resizing options and a fixed aspect ratio. In addition, with the previous controls, you can only leave the meeting or turn the camera/microphone on and off. While it’s a relatively small change, it makes the app much more useful for productivity (or letting you play a game of Eggman without being noticed).
The update is now available for Google Meet on the Chrome browser and will be rolled out more widely in the coming weeks. Google provides complete instructions for using the new features here.
