Hands-on with the LG Gram Pro 2-in-1: Enhanced OLED screen brings improved speed and portability to this lightweight convertible laptop.
LG has consistently introduced updates to its Gram series of ultra-thin and lightweight laptops at CES. It has always been interesting to test the physical exertion required to handle the latest version. At CES 2024, LG is unveiling two Pro models with enhanced OLED screens that offer touch functionality and variable refresh rates. These models are equipped with Intel’s Meteor Lake processors and can be paired with NVIDIA’s RTX 3070 graphics cards.
This generation of LG’s Gram Pro is available in 16-inch and 17-inch models with a choice of OLED and IPS display options. The company also updated the pen to charge when magnetically attached to laptops. The pen available on the showfloor didn’t work, so I couldn’t see if its thinner body affected the writing experience at all. Additionally, the Gram Pro 2-in-1’s model occasionally stuttered when I changed the orientation of the screen when I rotated it between landscape and portrait mode.
I’m willing to talk about it for units using pre-production software, which is why I also didn’t get to check out LG’s software features on these laptops. First, the Gram Pros’ processors are equipped with Intel’s AI Boost, which is supposed to help machines perform AI tasks faster. LG also offers its Link software, which lets you use Windows, Android, and even iOS devices as secondary displays for the Grams. However, neither of these features was demonstrated in the CES 2024 demo area.
What I was able to inspect in person is the build, which the LG representative told me is more durable than before. It uses nano-magnesium alloy and has an impressive dual-fan cooling system. For a system that includes that hardware and includes two USB-A, two USB-C, and HDMI ports (along with a headphone jack), the 17-inch Gram Pro I chose was surprisingly stylish. It has a sculpted rim that is thicker at the left end and tapers to a striking pointed end.
The 2-in-1, which is only available in 16-inch size, has won the Guinness World Record for “Lightest 16-inch 2-in-1 Laptop”. It weighs 3 pounds, which made it not at all challenging for the bicep curls and shoulder presses I did with it. But this also means it won’t add too much to your load when you’re on the go.
We’ve been concerned about the build quality of Gram laptops in the past, as they’ve been so thin that their bodies have shown flex. This year’s model is just as sleek, with a 12.4mm profile and a nano-magnesium body like the non-2-in-1 version. The unit I reviewed certainly felt a bit stronger than ones I’ve seen in previous years, but I can’t give you more specifics because I didn’t try hard to break it in.
You can choose between OLED or IPS panels, with the former offering a variable refresh rate between 48-120Hz and the latter stretching the range to 31-140Hz. The Gram Pro series will be available in February and start at $1,499. For more information on the new features of the 2024 Gram Pro notebooks, see our news release here.
