Increase in Streaming Content of Films and Television Programs Over Last Two Years
Feeling inundated by the vast array of movies and TV shows available for streaming online? There’s a logical explanation behind it.
According to a report released Monday by market researcher Nielsen, the number of titles on streaming services jumped 39 percent over the past two years to 2.35 million. When traditional broadcast and cable channels are added, the number of individual viewing options rose to 2.7 million. Figures describe films and shows available in the US, Canada, UK, Mexico and Germany.
Netflix and Disney are among 167 streaming providers, up from 118 two years ago. The average time it takes to find someone to watch has risen to more than 10 minutes, up from just over seven minutes in 2019, Nielsen said.
The company attributes the growth in recent years in part to the expansion of free, ad-supported streaming services such as Paramount Global’s Pluto and Fox Corp.’s Tub. NBCUniversal has announced plans to launch dedicated channels for certain shows, such as Saturday Night Live and Top Chef, the report states.
In the US in May, 60% of all streaming time was spent on programs that originally aired on regular TV.
