This was especially after he met with top industry stakeholders to discuss the state of mobile phones in India.
According to the minister’s remarks, in 2014, India was import-dependent, with 78% of all mobile devices imported, but the number has gradually declined. It is now claimed that 99.2% of mobile phones sold in India are now ‘Made in India’, marking a positive change in the evolution of the industry over the past decade.
Most manufacturers, including Chinese companies such as BBK-owned Oppo, Vivo, OnePlus or Xiaomi, have manufactured and assembled smartphones in India.
Also, it cannot be forgotten that iPhones are also now assembled in India – Foxconn’s Tamil Nadu factory and several others including Winstron and Pegatron.
Especially this year, the “Assembled In India” iPhone 15 models were available for purchase by Indian customers right on the day of release.
Additionally, the Tata group recently completed the acquisition of Winstron’s Indian operations and aims to start manufacturing iPhones in about two and a half years. “In just two-and-a-half years, Tata Companies will start manufacturing iPhones in India for the domestic and international markets,” India’s Minister of State for Electronics and Information Technology Rajeev Chandrasekhar said, praising Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s PLI scheme last month. . “Congratulations to the Tata team for taking over Wistron operations,” he added.
Apple has also focused much more on the Indian market and now also has two official Apple stores in the country – Apple BKC in Mumbai and Apple Saket in New Delhi.
