MapmyIndia App Outperforms Google Maps, Becomes Most Popular Navigation App on App Stores

Mappls MapmyIndia, the Indian-made maps and navigation app, has claimed the top spot on the Apple iOS App Store, surpassing all other applications in all categories. Additionally, it has secured the leading position in the navigation category, while Google Maps ranks seventh in popularity on the Apple App Store. Furthermore, Mappls MapmyIndia dominates the Maps and Navigation category on the Android Google Play Store, making it the most favored app in this genre.

Mappls App is among the top 15 apps in the Google Play Store in all categories, ahead of other similar apps (Maps & Navigation and Travel & Locals). Google Maps is not one of the top 100 apps in the Google Play Store.

The app is powered by the most advanced and state-of-the-art underlying map data and technology, enabling all users to have the smartest, safest and most accurate map and navigation experience in the country.

The company built India’s first internet mapping platform and portal, MapmyIndia.com (now called Mappls.com) in 2004.

Rohan Verma CEO & ED, MapmyIndia & Mappls told ReturnByte about the success, “The vast majority, 95% of people from India, mainly downloaded the Mappls App because the app mainly focuses on providing map information about this country. It also happened at a time when we simply did not advertise. Some NRIs from the US, Canada and the Middle East also download this app, but mainly because they want to see their country.”

“Over the last few months, people have suddenly realized why Google Maps is used when the Mapples App offers so much detail. All this happened in a very organic way, we never paid any influencer to make a video about this, we didn’t go to any advertising, but people started talking about it and one by one people started using this app,” he added.

Regarding taking this app to other countries, Verma stated that the company may eventually plan something, but for now, due to the large size of the Indian market, the focus is on helping hundreds of millions of citizens with safer road mapping features such as junction view, speed limit warnings, tolls and travel costs along the route, safety warnings of upcoming speed limits, sharp curves and potholes.

“First we want to solve India’s problems and work for this country, and eventually we want to go international. But right now the main focus is on India, Verma said.
