Mastodon Users Can Now Verify Their Profile with Major Threads Update

The text-based social media landscape is currently undergoing a significant transformation. While Twitter, a well-established platform and the originator of this format, has been focused on creating revenue opportunities for its users and enhancing its immersive video experience, newer platforms like Mastodon, Threads, and Bluesky are revolutionizing the social media experience with advanced technology. This movement is referred to as ‘fediverse’, allowing users to seamlessly switch between different social media platforms without the need to create new profiles or lose their existing data. In line with this trend, Meta’s Threads recently released a major update, which includes the ability for Threads users to verify their profiles on Mastodon and other supported platforms, among other features.

Adam Mosseri, head of Instagram, posted late yesterday, August 9, about the new feature. He said: “We’ve also introduced Threads support for rel=me links so you can verify your identity on platforms like Mastodon. You can now add your Threads profile link on supported platforms to verify your identity. Proud of the team for taking meaningful steps towards adopting open standards and fedivers .”

What is fediversi and how it works

Also known as the Fediverse (a portmanteau of federate and universe), this decentralized feature is considered the next logical step in creating a platformless social media experience. Consider the following scenario.

Maybe you like a group of people you connect with on a social media platform and would like to see their posts, but the platform either has a weird algorithm that recommends posts you’re not interested in, or lacks some of the features you want, or just does them. doesn’t match your aesthetic. In the days of Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, you were kind of stuck and the only option you had was to create a whole new profile on a new platform and start over, whether it was adding posts or new friends or filling out your bio. . With years of data stored on each platform, it also served as a deterrent to exploring new social media platforms.

But this is no longer the case with the federated framework. This new ActivityPub protocol allows you to use your profile as an independent domain. So all your messages, photos, friends, basically all your data is stored on this domain. You can simply use this domain link, add it to another website and start using it. The site accepts your information and fills in all the information, adds your message history and adds all your friends who use the platform. And you can start using the site as if you’ve been using it for years.

We’re at the beginning of this technology, but eventually it’s supposed to look something like this.

Threads get more features

While the versatile feature has become the main talking point, Mosseri also announced four additional features for Threads.

In a separate message, he said: “Threads updates keep coming.

Here’s what’s new:

Share threads in Instagram DMs – tap the share button and you’ll now see “Post on Instagram”

See all the threads you’ve liked – go to your profile, go to settings and select “Your Likes”

Sort the accounts you follow – click on followers in the profile, go to following and tap “Sort”.

Add custom alt text – paste your image/video and tap “Alt Text” to add.

However, Threads DM, research page and trending page, the three most requested features, are still not added to the platform. It was previously reported that the developers are working to bring these features as soon as possible.
