Microsoft bids farewell to THIS app; Learn when you’ll need to say goodbye
Legacy applications that were once useful to the public are slowly being discontinued in the constantly evolving landscape. Microsoft recently announced that Publisher will no longer receive support starting on October 13th, 2026.
Microsoft pulls the plug
News of Publisher’s impending demise was first reported by @StephenCWLL on X, who was notified of the app’s shutdown. According to the announcement, Publisher will lose support and be effectively “dead” on October 13, 2026. Microsoft revealed plans to explore integrating Publisher’s core components with more widely used Office applications such as Word, PowerPoint, and Designer. until the closing date, XDA Developer reports.
Microsoft officially announced the discontinuation of Publisher in the Microsoft 365 Admin Center with a message highlighting that most of the app’s features are already available in other Microsoft 365 apps. In particular, Microsoft Word and PowerPoint offer similar functionality for creating custom calendars, business cards, envelopes, and letterheads.
Publisher’s legacy
Users can continue to use Publisher with its current functionality until October 2026. Support for the permanent version of Publisher will end when Office LTSC 2021 ends. Microsoft 365 customers will no longer be able to use Publisher from then on. Microsoft envisions a future where Publisher components integrate seamlessly with widely used Office applications, improving the overall user experience.
Given Publisher’s few updates in recent years, the decision to redistribute its features to more popular apps seems strategic. Microsoft’s move adapts to the changing needs of users, so those who rely on Publisher can continue to use its features without burdening Office 365 with unnecessary features. It remains to be seen whether users will miss Publisher, as the app has received little attention from Microsoft in recent years and is not necessarily considered a must-have subscription feature.
Basically, when Microsoft says goodbye to Publisher, the PC work experience will become a little lighter in the future.
