Microsoft claims that their AI service will speed up scientific discovery by allowing batteries to be painted.

Microsoft Corp. is employing advanced computers and artificial intelligence to accelerate the laborious process of uncovering novel chemical compounds and materials, which have potential applications ranging from batteries to environmentally friendly paints.

The Pacific Northwest National Laboratory used the company’s Azure Quantum Elements service to quickly evaluate 32 million possible materials for the new battery, says Jason Zander, Microsoft’s vice president of strategic missions and technology. The Ministry of Energy’s facility received 18 promising candidates after only 80 hours of use of the service – a process that would take decades using traditional research methods. Paint company AkzoNobel has also used the service to develop sustainable products, while British chemical manufacturer Johnson Matthey Plc uses it to speed up the work of hydrogen fuel cells.

Introduced last year, Azure Quantum Elements doesn’t actually rely on quantum computing, despite its name. That’s partly because the company’s push to develop working quantum computers, which use the motion of subatomic particles to process massive amounts of data, is late. But Microsoft has been quick to bake generative AI into most of its products, including this one. “Artificial intelligence isn’t just for improving Office and business products,” Zander said. “It’s also something that can speed up scientific discovery.”

One area of particular focus is the ongoing effort to banish so-called forever chemicals that have been linked to cancer and are used in hundreds of everyday products—from fabric protectors, electronics and non-stick pans to Styrofoam, duct tape and even toilet paper. . Zander said Microsoft can help customers find safer options faster.

Ultimately, the company plans to use quantum computing to accelerate scientific discoveries.

“To do computational chemistry and molecular science, we need very large-scale quantum computers,” he said. “We’re all working on them, but we’ll get there eventually.”
