Microsoft Guarantees AI Products Will Abide by Laws
In an effort to retain clients’ investments in AI tools, Microsoft Corp. plans to develop a program that guarantees the compliance of their artificial intelligence software with future laws and regulations. This move aims to prepare customers for any upcoming rules that may govern the use of this new technology.
The software company is helping customers manage regulatory issues arising from AI applications it uses with Microsoft, convening customer councils on the issues and continuing to work with lawmakers “to advance effective and interoperable AI regulation,” Microsoft said in a blog post Thursday.
The Redmond, Washington-based software maker is releasing a range of artificial intelligence tools and products, revamping some of its best-known programs with technology from OpenAI, the maker of ChatGPT, which counts Microsoft as its biggest investor. With both companies pushing for AI regulation, including a separate US agency to oversee the issue, and European lawmakers debating a proposed AI bill, Microsoft wants to encourage customers to buy these new products while the legal landscape takes shape.
“There are legitimate concerns about the power of technology and the potential to use it for more harm than good,” wrote Antony Cook, Microsoft’s executive vice president and general counsel, in a blog post.
