Microsoft President Visits Europe to Influence Artificial Intelligence Regulation Discussions
During a speech in Brussels, Microsoft President Brad Smith reiterated his stance on the advantages of regulating artificial intelligence and emphasized how his company can contribute to this effort. This echoes his previous message delivered in Washington last month.
Along with Twitter owner and Tesla CEO Elon Musk, Smith has called for regulators and lawmakers to regulate artificial intelligence, a technology that has sparked wide public interest with the arrival of Microsoft-backed OpenAI’s ChatGPT.
Big Tech has shared suggestions on how to best regulate AI, which could help reduce the impact of such rules on their business.
The European Union is preparing details of the rules, known as the AI Act, the first global legislation that could set a benchmark for other countries.
“Our intent is to provide constructive input that will help inform future work,” Smith said in a blog post. He later repeated his words at a conference in Brussels.
He said Microsoft’s five-point plan to manage AI, which includes government-led AI security frameworks, safety brakes on AI systems that control critical infrastructure and ensuring academic access to AI, is in line with the proposed EU legislation.
Smith also called on the EU, the US, the G7 countries, India and Indonesia to work together to manage artificial intelligence according to their shared values and principles.
