Microsoft takes Grammarly with its new Web extension

Today, Microsoft announced that it will re-sell Office 365 under the name Microsoft 365 as it expands its capabilities beyond work. One of the most exciting new features is Microsoft Editor, a corporate grammar challenger that rivals the existence of Grammarly.

While Microsoft has had spelling and grammar correction in Word and other Office applications for as long as I can remember, Microsoft Editor doubles the feature by providing AI-based writing suggestions that go beyond normal prices. It is also available as an extension outside of Office applications for both Chrome and the new Edge.

The new vendor extends spell checking in a number of ways:

  • Suggestions to improve the clarity of the sentences
  • Proposes an alternative vocabular
  • Reminds you when to use the official language
  • Supports more than 20 languages
  • Similarity Checker will help you get plagiarism or give you quick references if you have written yourself
  • Suggest alternative punctuation
  • Suggest gender-neutral and inclusive terms to reduce natural misspellings
  • Provide information on how long it will take to read or speak the document

For example, the app might suggest ‘police’ instead of ‘police’, or suggest that you write an abbreviation for the first mention. The app can even write whole sentences,

The new reporter is heading for the Grammarly program, which offers similar contextual suggestions, albeit with a few strengths – we need to test two tools side by side to see how they compare.

Microsoft Editor launches today and will be available worldwide by the end of April. It’s still not available from the Chrome Web Store at the time of writing, but we assume it’s only a matter of time.
