Microsoft wants to integrate Android apps into Windows 10: here’s how
Apple users have a big advantage over Android users. They can seamlessly use their iPhone apps on their Apple PCs and laptops. Of course, Microsoft has the Your Phone app. However, this is available on some Samsung Galaxy smartphones. This is about to change, thanks to Latte … ehmm … Project Latte.
To give you a quick overview, Microsoft is working on a software solution called Project Latte that will allow developers to bring their Android apps to Windows 10 with little or no modification.
The project, according to a report from Windows Central, Microsoft’s Project Latte is based on the Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL). WSL will also get support for Linux GUI apps and GPU apps soon, which should improve the performance of Android apps running on Windows 10 using WSL.
Although this can solve a lot of problems for developers, but not all. The post says Google doesn’t allow Play Services to be installed on anything other than Android smartphones and devices running Chrome OS. This means that java developers will remove this dependency on the Play Services API in order to run their Play Store apps on Windows 10.
That said, this isn’t the first time Microsoft has attempted to bring Android apps to Windows 10. The company was working on a project called Astoria that aimed to achieve the same result. But it never saw the light of day. Now he hopes to change the fate of Project Astoria with Project Latte.
The report indicates that Microsoft is expected to present this project as early as next year. However, we won’t bet big on this given what happened with Project Astoria. For now, all we can do is keep our fingers crossed.
