Netflix Expands Availability of Video Games Across Platforms
In a recent blog post, Mike Verdu, the Vice President of Games at Netflix, announced that the company will be conducting trials to assess the feasibility of making games available on a wider range of devices. These trials will initially focus on select TVs and computers.
The company is rolling out limited beta testing to a small group of members in Canada and the UK on select TVs starting Monday, and on PCs and Macs via Netflix.com on supported browsers in the coming weeks.
The streaming platform had started pushing into the gaming experience by launching Netflix games for mobile devices in November 2021. So far, the company’s games have only been available for Apple’s iOS and Alphabet’s Android.
“Oxenfree” from Night School Studio, Netflix Game Studio, and “Molehew’s Mining Adventure,” a gem mining game, are part of the initial testing.
Users can play games on TV with their phones, and PCs and Macs can play on Netflix.com using a keyboard and mouse.
“By making the games available on more devices, we hope to make the games even easier for our players around the world,” said Verdu.
Netflix said the TV games will work on original partners’ Amazon Fire TV Streaming Media Player, Chromecast with Google TV and Roku devices, among others.
In March, the company had announced that it had a content list of 40 games later this year and 70 in development with its partners, which would add to the 16 games currently being developed by the company’s in-house game studios.
