Netflix users are now unable to pay for the service using Apple’s platform.
If you’re a Netflix subscriber and pay for it with Apple’s in-app purchase option, you’ll need to start paying for it with an alternative payment method, Netflix says, notifying subscribers.
This significant development comes after the company moved in a similar direction in 2018, which saw it prevent users from signing up for the service via iPhone and iPad.
During that time, the streaming giant allowed Netflix users to pay for the service through Apple’s payment system, but now that Apple isn’t giving up on its cut, the streaming giant is moving past it.
This was first reported by The Streamable, where the publication reported that Netflix has asked users to update their payment method. Simply put, Netflix no longer has to pay Apple a cut, making it less dependent and therefore able to make more money.
Also, if you visit this Netflix US support page, you’ll see the recently updated wording. “Some Apple-billed members in certain countries may be asked to add a new payment method to continue their subscription.”
In related news, Netflix has ditched its most affordable ad-free plan at $11.99 per month. The change is scheduled to begin in Canada and Great Britain in the second quarter of this year. As a result, the most cost-effective ad-free option for Netflix subscribers is the $15.99 plan.
