New macOS Big Sur brings together some older MacBook Pro models
Apple released the latest macOS update, the Big Sur, last Thursday and the story hasn’t been very smooth since. A lot of older MacBook Pro users, the 13-inch MacBook Pro in late 2013, 2014, reported that Big Sur’s update is beefing up their machines.
The MacRumours forum thread has a fairly large number of users reporting this issue and similar complaints have been reported by users on Reddit and Apple Support Communities, also indicating that this issue is widespread.
According to the complaints, users report that during the process of updating to macOS Big Sur, their machines get stuck showing a black screen. Key reset combinations including NVRAM, SMC, Safe Mode and Internet Recovery are all inaccessible, according to reports. This leaves users with no way around the static black screen they face right after trying to install the update.
It seems that a large number of users facing this problem are those who own older MacBooks, especially the 13-inch MacBook Pro models in late 2013 and 2014. However, it is not known exactly how many users of these. models were affected. Also, these are the older MacBook models supported by Big Sur.
One Reddit user noted that Apple Support told them to reserve their MacBook Pro for repair and another Apple Support thread user said the issue was passed on to the Apple engineering team so that Apple is probably aware of the problem.
Until it’s clear why this is happening, it’s best for MacBook Pro owners with older models to avoid the new update.
