OpenAI team prioritizes democratic processes in artificial intelligence software development
In a blog post on Tuesday, OpenAI, the artificial intelligence lab supported by Microsoft, announced the establishment of a new team. This team’s objective is to develop democratic procedures that will determine the governance of OpenAI’s AI software, with a focus on addressing bias and other related factors.
The “Collective Alignment” team is a continuation of the work of a grant program to fund experiments in democratic processes announced in May 2023, the San Francisco-based company said. The program ended recently.
“As we continue our mission towards super-intelligent models that could potentially be seen as integral parts of our society… it’s important to empower people to contribute directly,” Tyna Eloundou, research engineer and co-founder of OpenAI’s New Model. team, reported Reuters.
To ensure that only humans can vote, for example, OpenAI could partner with Worldcoin, a cryptocurrency project founded by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman that offers a way to separate humans and AI bots, said product manager Teddy Lee. the second member of a two-person team.
Lee noted that the team has yet to make concrete plans to integrate Worldcoin.
Since OpenAI launched ChatGPT in late 2022, the generative AI technology, capable of spinning insanely authoritative prose from text prompts, has captivated audiences and made the program one of the fastest-growing apps of all time.
However, AI’s ability to create “deepfake” images and other misinformation is a concern, especially as the 2024 US election campaign heats up. Critics say AI systems like ChatGPT have inherent bias from the inputs used to shape their views, and users have found examples of AI software producing racist or sexist results.
The new OpenAI team is actively looking to hire a research engineer and researcher, Eloundou said. The team works closely with OpenAI’s “Human Data” team, which is building the infrastructure to collect human input into the company’s AI models, and other research groups.
