‘Project Loki’ Combines Elements of ‘League of Legends’ and ‘Fortnite’
Joe Tung, who led development on League of Legends for almost eight years, left Riot at the end of 2020 to establish Theorycraft Games. The studio, consisting of individuals who have contributed to popular games such as League, Valorant, Overwatch, Halo, Destiny, and Apex Legends, has been diligently working on their inaugural project, known as Project Loki. Until now, only a select few content creators and professional gamers have had the opportunity to play Loki. However, this is about to change as Theorycraft has announced a two-day PC playtest, commencing tomorrow, June 29th.
Theorycraft describes the Project Loki hero battlefield. Imagine a game with MOBA-like heroes who have to perform skill shots as best they can. Instead of pitting these characters against each other on a map with minions and turrets, you force them to fight on a large, Fortnite-inspired battlefield. That’s Project Loki’s pitch, and the studio hopes it will be the next game you decide to spend 10,000 hours playing with your friends. One thing that Tung, whose background includes Halo: Reach, says is that the core of Project Loki is the creativity of the players. Each session begins with you and your teammates picking a group of heroes that you think will win you the match, and they have to adapt your strategies on the fly.
Tung says Theorycraft Games is a “small and very independent game studio,” but has the backing of venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz, which participated in the company’s $50 million Series B fundraising round last year. In other words, betting that Theorycraft can create the next LoL or Apex Legends is a lot of money. Expect to hear more about the game in the coming weeks and months. You can register for the Playtest Loki project on Theorycraft’s website.
