Report Predicts 57 Percent Of Mobile Subscriptions In India Will Be 5G By 2028
Ericsson Mobility Report predicts that India will have approximately 10 million 5G subscriptions by the end of 2022, and it is expected to represent 57% of mobile subscriptions in the country by the end of 2028. This makes India the world’s fastest-growing 5G region.
With the launch of 5G services in October 2022, India’s largest 5G market will witness massive network deployments under its Digital India initiative, it noted.
Despite geopolitical challenges and a macroeconomic slowdown in some markets, communications service providers worldwide continue to invest in 5G, the June 2023 Ericsson Mobility Report revealed.
“The number of 5G subscriptions in India rose to about 10 million by the end of 2022 and is estimated to account for about 57 percent of the country’s mobile subscriptions by the end of 2028, making it the fastest growing 5G region globally,” it said.
5G mobile phone subscriptions are growing in all regions and are predicted to exceed 1.5 billion worldwide by the end of 2023.
The adoption of 5G subscriptions in North America has been stronger than expected in previous forecasts. The region had the world’s highest 5G subscription density, 41 percent at the end of 2022.
Data traffic on the global mobile network continues to grow, and the monthly average global smartphone usage is expected to exceed 20 GB by the end of 2023.
The report also highlighted the continuation of revenue growth in leading 5G markets.
“The global adoption of 5G technology has exceeded one billion subscriptions, which has brought positive revenue growth to communications service providers in leading 5G markets,” said Fredrik Jejdling, Ericsson’s Vice President and Head of Networks.
Over the past two years, the introduction of 5G in the twenty largest markets has led to a seven percent increase in revenue, Jejdling emphasized the strong connection between the growth of 5G subscriptions and service revenues.
Globally, around 240 communications service providers (CSPs) have launched commercial 5G services and around 35 have deployed or launched 5G stand-alone (SA). The most common 5G services launched by service providers to consumers are enhanced mobile broadband (eMBB), fixed wireless access (FWA), games and some (augmented reality and virtual reality) AR/VR-based services such as education and training.
The report also reveals that 5G will continue to innovate in the packaging of mobile services.
It is increasingly common among communication service providers to offer packages of various popular entertainment services, such as television, music streaming or cloud gaming platforms.
About 58 percent of 5G service providers currently do so in various forms.
According to Ericsson, by 2028, 5G will account for an estimated 80 percent of all FWA connections.
