Samsung Developing Wearable Device Called ‘Galaxy Ring’
As Samsung’s range of products expands, there are indications that they may introduce a fresh collection of smart wearable devices named the ‘Galaxy Ring’.
According to The Elec, Samsung has already started developing a smart device that will be presented in the form of a ring. But it’s currently uncertain when or if the alleged smart Galaxy Ring will actually launch. Elec further notes that Samsung will likely take the call if it plans to “mass produce the rings” only after “reviewing the prototype it made with Meiko.”
Meiko is said to be the Japanese manufacturer making the circuit boards for this project.
In theory, smart rings could provide more accurate measurements than traditional wearables such as watches because they are “tightly bound” to the wearer’s body. But at the same time, if the ring is too tight, it can restrict blood flow and produce inaccurate readings.
With this project, Samsung could try to create its own take on an Oura ring that offers fitness tracking — or maybe even a McClear Ring that lets you make payments. Last month, we interviewed Daniel Blondell, COO of McLear, and he told us how convenient the ring-like shape can be for making payments. The McClear Ring is a piece of jewelry that you can wear on any finger. Tap to pay at any contactless point of sale – this means you can pay with a tap on the ring instead of a credit card.
So if Samsung’s implementation works along similar lines, it could certainly make smart rings more popular – and pair with the Galaxy products it offers. However, it is also possible that Samsung is only working on its research and development and may not have any plans to launch a smart ring.
