Samsung plans to manufacture laptops in India following the production of the Galaxy S24, a smartphone made in India.
A senior official from Samsung, the major Korean electronics company, announced on Monday that they have begun shipping their premium smartphone Galaxy S24, which is made in India. Additionally, the company has made the decision to manufacture laptops at their Noida factory in the country later this year.
T M Roh, president and head of the Mobile eXperience (MX) business at Samsung Electronics, told reporters that India is gearing up to manufacture the laptop as it has termed India as its major manufacturing base.
“We will start manufacturing laptops at the Noida plant this year. Preparations are already underway,” said an official Visiting India.
Roh said India is an important production area for the company and has received support at various levels from the state and central government.
The company will continue to work with the government to strengthen manufacturing in India, he added.
The company has recently launched its flagship Galaxy S24 series of smartphones, focusing on the device’s artificial intelligence capabilities.
More than 2.5 million customers in India have ordered the Galaxy S24 smartphone since pre-bookings opened in the country on January 18.
Samsung has started shipping the made-in-India Galaxy S24 to customers who have pre-booked the device. The company also exports the Galaxy S24 device from India.
Responding to a question about reducing Samsung’s share of mobile phone exports from India, Roh said that according to market experts, the global smartphone market has declined by around 5 percent and production at Samsung factories has been optimized to meet global demand. .
“Noida is a very important production base for Samsung. It is Samsung’s second largest base. There may be some changes in the factory to optimize it according to global demand, but what remains unchanged is that it is an important base for us,” Roh said.
He also said that the Noida plant started manufacturing feature phones, smartphones, wearables and tablets and now the company will start manufacturing laptops this year.
When asked about the impact of India’s AI server shortage on the experience of the Galaxy S24 AI features, Roh said the smartphone supports both cloud-based AI and on-device AI.
“Some of the cloud-based AI features on the device are also tailored for the mobile environment, which means they’re made lighter and specialized for the mobile AI environment. This means that whether it’s in the US or China, as you mentioned, or in India, and in fact anywhere in the world, you can enjoy cloud-based AI features without big differences,” Roh said.
The Ministry of Electronics and IT is preparing a proposal to develop an AI ecosystem in the country at a cost of over ₹10,000 crore. According to the proposal, the ministry plans to establish an artificial intelligence computing infrastructure in a public-private partnership mode to enhance the artificial intelligence ecosystem.
Roh said the company will also expand AI capabilities to 100 million Galaxy devices this year, similar to what it has rolled out with the Galaxy S24 series.
“The smartphone is important today and will be even more important down the road because it’s the device that people use anywhere, anytime, and it’s the easiest to use and do what you want and when you want. In other words, I think the mobile device will be the center of AI and AI features core,” Roh said.
