Say Goodbye To Your Protective Phone Case – Here’s Why iPhone Users Should Make the Switch
The glass exterior of iPhones may give them a luxurious appearance, but it also makes them vulnerable to damage from even a single accidental drop. As a result, a new market for iPhone accessories has emerged to help users keep their devices in pristine condition.
While most iPhone users invest in a durable case, future models may be much more durable than the current ones. Apple has applied for a new patent, the purpose of which is to strengthen the body of the iPhone and make it scratch-resistant.
A new filing suggests that Apple hopes to design iPhones to be scratch-resistant and abrasion-resistant. The new materials will likely be mixed into the iPhone’s back panel, meaning the days of durable iPhone cases may soon be over.
The patent suggests that Apple relies on materials that are wear-resistant, called Spatial Composites. The patent application document names Apple engineers Stephen Lynch, Teodor Dabov and Christopher Perst as the inventors of these materials.
So what is the spatial composite that makes iPhones scratch-resistant? It is said to be a mix of metal and ceramic composites with properties that make the panels scratch-resistant.
The company believes that the new composite offers the right balance between durability and clear radio connectivity, which can be a challenge for the materials used to make iPhone back panels. The patent application is for spatial composite, but it remains to be seen which direction Apple is going with this new material.
iPhones cost a fortune and keeping them safe will be critical, but now Apple’s move to other materials means iPhone prices could rise even higher, which is hardly surprising when you look at how iPhone prices have risen in recent years.
