Spectacular Super Blue Moon Illuminates the Heavens

Astronomers across the nation were delighted on August 30 as they witnessed a rare celestial phenomenon called a Super Blue Moon in the sky.

A supermoon and a blue moon rarely overlap, so Wednesday night’s moon is a rare sight. According to NASA, super blue moons occur on average every 10 years. The next super blue moon won’t happen again until January 2037.

When the Moon comes closest to Earth, it appears much larger in the sky. As a result, it is known as a supermoon. This supermoon is considered a rare celestial event because it is the second to occur in August, after the first one on August 1st.

A blue moon has nothing to do with the color of the moon. NASA defines it as the second full moon in one month. “Once in a blue moon” occurs on average every two and a half years.

It is said that the Blue Moon was at its brightest around 9:30 p.m. (IST), while the Blue Super Moon will be at its brightest around 7:30 a.m. (IST) on August 31.

The super blue moon pictures from Guwahati, Assam was a rare sight indeed.

Similarly, everyone was excited to see the super blue moon in Kolkata.

The visuals of Bihar also amazed everyone.

Lucknow became a stunning visual that looked beautiful and could be watched for hours.

“About 25 percent of all full moons are supermoons, but only 3 percent of full moons are blue moons,” NASA scientists wrote on the Earth’s Moon website. “The time between super blue moons is quite irregular — it can be as long as 20 years — but usually 10 years is the average. The next super blue moons will occur in pairs, in January and March 2037, according to the New York Post.

A supermoon is a full moon that occurs when the Moon is at perigee, the closest distance to Earth. According to the Natural History Museum in London, the Moon appears 14 percent larger than a “micromoon” when the Moon is farthest from Earth in an elliptical orbit.

The supermoon will also shine 30 percent more light on Earth compared to the dimmest full moon, reports the New York Post.
