Stanford University Investigating Possible Cyber Attack
The Department of Public Safety at Stanford University is currently under investigation for a cybersecurity incident, according to an announcement made by the university on Friday.
The university said in a statement that the breach did not appear to “affect police response to emergencies” and that the system is now secure. In addition, Stanford said there is no indication that other parts of the university have been affected.
The department is a 24-hour, seven-day-a-week police service consisting of sworn officers and officers who patrol the campus and respond to calls, the university says on its website.
“Our privacy and security teams have given this issue joint attention, in collaboration with external experts,” the university said. “The investigation is ongoing and once it is complete we will act accordingly and be able to share more information with the community.”
A hacking group called Akira claimed responsibility for the attack and said it stole confidential and internal information from the university, according to a post on its dark web page.
