This sealed first-gen iPhone fetches Rs 52 lakh at auction: all the details
Apple iPhones have become a status symbol in the last decade since its release. Millions still want to own an iPhone because of its significance. But this doesn’t just apply to newer models, in fact iPhones tend to be popular in many auctions as well.
What if we told you that the first generation iPhone was recently sold at one auction for a whopping Rs 52 lakh? Well, we’re not kidding.
This first generation iPhone was factory sealed, meaning it was completely packed in the manufacturing box, and some lucky guy decided it was worth over half a million. The first-generation iPhone model is from 2007 and fetched $63,356 (roughly Rs. 53 lakh) over the weekend.
Now, when you look at the iPhone’s specs and design, most of you would be baffled that someone would waste so much on this model. But this is the novelty that Apple brings to the table, which makes it an ideal collector’s item, like vintage paintings and objects. This first-generation iPhone offers 8GB of storage and was launched for $599 (roughly Rs. 48,000) in 2007.
As for the auction, this iPhone model went up for bid at a starting price of $2,500 (Rs. 2.06 lakh), which itself is quite extraordinary. The fact that it went for 4x the price tells you how much an old boxed iPhone could fetch at these auctions.
The phone belongs to Karen Green, who received it as a gift from a friend 15 years ago. According to reports, the phone sold for an estimated $5,000 in 2019, after which it went up for auction. Green has decided to use the proceeds from the auction to start a new business.
