TikTok to Implement Content Restrictions in Kenya Following Complaints of Immorality

After a meeting with TikTok’s CEO Shou Zi Chew, the President of Kenya announced that the popular social media platform has agreed to regulate the content shared on its platform in the East African nation.

The announcement follows an initiative by the country’s parliament last week to investigate the use of TikTok after receiving a petition calling for it to be banned for “promoting violence, overt sexual content, hate speech, vulgar language and offensive behaviour”.

“This new development means that inappropriate or offensive content will be removed from the platform,” the president said on his website after a virtual meeting between President William Ruto and TikTok executives.

The app, which has more than a billion users worldwide, still faces potential bans in its most important markets, including the United States and the European Union. In the U.S., lawmakers have proposed several bills that could prevent its use, and the federal government has an excellent privacy review for its privacy practices.

This week, the Somali government suspended TikTok and Telegram because they promote immorality and terrorism. Senegal has also suspended TikTok over concerns that it is being used to promote violent protests.
