Twitter Begins Distributing Funds to Indian Content Creators

Elon Musk, the owner of X (formerly Twitter), introduced a program called Ads Revenue Sharing on July 29. This initiative aims to distribute a portion of the company’s advertising revenue generated from post and profile impressions back to the community and content creators on the platform. Users in the US and Europe have been sharing emails from the company, informing them about the upcoming amount they will receive. Recently, Indian creators also started receiving similar emails and took to the microblogging platform to share screenshots of their earnings from the platform.

A popular user named Maithun (Being_Humor) thanked Musk and said he received Rs. 3,51,000 from the company. The account has approximately 382,000 followers. Another user named Gabbar (GabbbarSingh) who has 1.4 million followers got Rs. 2,09,282 from X and said, “Blue mite ke paise vasool (the blue mite was worth the money)”. However, the payment cap appears to be much higher, which means that content creators can theoretically earn even more. In comparison, a US-based creator named Ian Miles Cheong (@stillgray) received a payment of $13,306 (roughly Rs. 11 lakh) from the company.

Announcing the ad revenue sharing program, Musk tweeted: “Today is the day: Ad revenue sharing is now available to qualifying creators worldwide. Set up monetization fees to get paid to post. We want X to be the best place on the internet to make a living as a creator, and this is the first step in rewarding you for your efforts.

X ad revenue sharing: how it works

Through this program, eligible content creators receive a portion of the advertising revenue they generate through their content. So every time another user views an ad on their post or profile, the impression generates revenue for the platform, and it shares a portion of that with the content creator.

X also shared a list of eligibility criteria to earn through this opportunity. It has the following components:

  • The user must be a Blue or Verified Organizations subscriber.
  • User must have at least 15 million impressions with cumulative posts in the last three months.
  • The user must have at least 500 followers.

Those who qualify must create a Stripe account, which is X’s payment processor.

Users can apply for ad revenue sharing through the monetization option in the settings. Not all applicants will be accepted, and the applicant will be informed of the status of their application after processing. The platform has emphasized that compliance with the Creator Monetization Standards and X Rules are important criteria for monetization, and violation of them may result in a user being banned from the program.

Are you going to favor X Blue subscriptions?

Last month, some reports also highlighted that X was struggling to increase the number of its premium users, which is a cornerstone for generating a steady revenue stream as well as winning back advertisers. If more users followed X Blue’s guidelines, which are also what advertisers are looking for, more advertisers would likely come to the social media platform.

Some see this fee as a way to encourage users to pay for the subscription. At the same time, however, it cannot be denied that the program gives content producers on the platform the opportunity to support themselves financially, while freely creating more content for their followers.
