Twitter is making some of its source code public on Github, enabling a peak of its functionality
Twitter on Friday released parts of the computer code that decides how the social media site recommends content, giving users and programmers access to how it works and can suggest changes to the algorithm.
The company said it had uploaded the code to two archives on the code sharing platform Github.
They contain the source code for many parts of Twitter, including the recommendation algorithm that controls the tweets users see on their timelines.
The data stores do not contain the code that drives Twitter’s ad recommendations, it said.
The move comes at the behest of its billionaire owner Elon Musk, who previously hinted at revealing the code, saying that code transparency would lead to increased user trust and rapid product improvements.
