Twitter’s ‘violent speech’ policy announced: Here’s everything you need to know
Popular social media platform Twitter has updated its rules on “violent content and similar language”. The microblogging platform has now officially launched its “Violent Speech” policy. The new policy prohibits threats of violence, wishes of harm, glorification of violence, and incitement to violence, the company tweeted on its @TwitterSafety account.
The company, led by Elon Musk, maintains a “zero-tolerance policy” for violent speech to ensure user safety and prevent the normalization of violent actions. “Expressions of violent speech are permitted when there is no clear offensive or violent context,” the company said on the policy page.
The platform also allows “certain instances of speech, satire, or artistic expression when the context expresses a point of view rather than inciting violence or harm.”
The platform further mentioned that it assesses and understands the context behind the conversation before taking action. In most cases, Twitter will “immediately and permanently” suspend an account that violates this policy.
However, for minor violations, it will temporarily lock users out of their account before they can tweet again, and if they continue to violate this policy after being warned, their account will be permanently suspended. “If you believe that your account was suspended in error, you can file a complaint,” the platform added.
In related news, Twitter has removed captions from the company’s social audio rooms, “Spaces” on iOS. The company still advertises that users can enable subtitles in Space by clicking the three-dot menu, but this option is currently unavailable on iOS.
Additionally, the subtitles are not visible when listening to Spaces online, and while the “CC” subtitle button is visible, clicking it on or off has no effect. On Android, it is possible to enable subtitles, but it does not work.
