UN Security Council To Discuss Potential Dangers of Artificial Intelligence

This week in New York, the United Nations Security Council is set to convene its inaugural official deliberation on artificial intelligence (AI). Britain will take the lead in advocating for a worldwide conversation regarding the effects of AI on global peace and security.

Governments around the world are considering how to mitigate the dangers of emerging artificial intelligence technology, as it can transform the global economy and change the international security landscape.

Britain holds the rotating presidency of the UN Security Council this month and has sought global leadership in the regulation of artificial intelligence.

British Foreign Secretary James Cleverly will lead the discussion on Tuesday.

In June, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres backed a proposal by some AI leaders to create an international AI watchdog such as the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

A generative AI technology that can spin authoritative prose from text prompts, ChatGPT has taken audiences by storm since its launch six months ago, becoming the fastest-growing app of all time. AI has also raised concerns about its ability to create deep fake images and other misinformation.

“The alarm bells about the newest form of artificial intelligence – generative artificial intelligence – are falling on deaf ears. And they are loudest from the developers who designed it,” Guterres had told reporters. “We have to take those warnings seriously.”

He also announced plans to begin work by the end of the year on a high-level AI advisory body to regularly review AI governance arrangements and make recommendations on how they can align with human rights, the rule of law and the common good.
