US Government Limits AMD’s Sale of AI Chips to China Due to Their High Performance
Bloomberg News reported Monday that Advanced Micro Devices ran into a U.S. government roadblock in its bid to sell a customized artificial intelligence chip to the Chinese market as part of Washington’s crackdown on advanced technology exports.
AMD tried to get permission from the US Department of Commerce to sell its AI processor to China. The chip has lower performance than what AMD sells outside of China and is designed to meet US export restrictions, the report added, citing people familiar with the matter.
U.S. officials said the processor is still too powerful and that the company needs to obtain a license from the Commerce Department’s Industry and Security Administration to sell it in China, according to the report.
AMD and the Commerce Department did not immediately respond to Reuters’ request for comment.
In October, the U.S. planned to stop supplying China with more advanced artificial intelligence chips designed by Nvidia and others as part of measures to prevent Beijing from receiving cutting-edge U.S. technology to bolster its military.
