US Investigation Into Twitter’s 2018 Security Breach Before Elon Musk’s Leadership
(Reuters) – The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission is investigating how Twitter managed a 2018 security breach that exposed personal user data before billionaire Elon Musk bought the social media platform last year, Bloomberg News reported.
The agency has been investigating whether former top executives failed to adequately disclose these privacy issues to shareholders or put in place appropriate controls, according to the report, which cited people familiar with the matter.
At the time, the company was led by Jack Dorsey, Ned Segal as CFO and Parag Agrawal as CTO.
A bug on the social media platform had allowed outsiders to see users’ email addresses during password resets, revealing users’ identities, Bloomberg News said.
The company and the SEC did not immediately respond to Reuters requests for comment.
Musk renamed the social media platform X after the acquisition.
