YouTube Launches Automated Video Dubbing Tool for Multiple Languages
YouTube is expanding its language options for creators by introducing an AI-powered dubbing service called Aloud, which is being tested at Google’s Area 120 incubator. The Verge reported that the service will enable creators to dub their videos into other spoken languages, eliminating the need for human translators and narrators, and reducing the time and cost involved in the process. This move will enable creators to reach a wider global audience.
Aloud promises “quality dubbing in minutes” with artificial intelligence. The tool first creates a text-based translation that authors can review and edit, and then creates a copy. Users can choose different narrators, publishing method and more. Best of all, the service is available “for free,” Aloud’s website states.
YouTube is currently testing the tool with “hundreds” of creators, Amjad Hanif, YouTube’s director of product management, told The Verge. It’s currently available in English and allows you to copy to Spanish and Portuguese with “more languages coming soon,” according to Aloud.
From the user’s perspective, the setting appears as a “Soundtrack” switch in the gear icon, just below the subtitles. An example of that is the Amoeba Sisters science channel trailer, which uses native English, and the Spanish alternative created by Aloud’s AI.
The ability to easily copy languages can expand a creator’s reach without having to do anything else, Google said in its opening statement. There’s no word yet on when Aloud’s dubbing tool will become more widely available. In the future, however, YouTube will “make translated soundtracks sound like the creator’s voice, with more facial expressions and lip syncing,” Hanif said.
