NASA Warns of 46-Foot Asteroid RD15 Approaching Earth Today

Asteroids, although small, are an integral part of our solar system and have the potential to cause significant destruction. As a result, NASA is continuously working to track and study these asteroids to be prepared for any serious threats. By actively monitoring asteroids, NASA aims to protect Earth and gain a better understanding of their trajectories, as they hold many mysteries. When a new Near-Earth Asteroid (NEA) is detected by NASA’s telescopes, the agency’s astronomers collect observational data and share it with the Minor Planet Center. This information is then used by the Center for Near-Earth Object Studies (CNEOS) to calculate the asteroid’s likely orbit around the Sun. To efficiently assess the probabilities of NEA impacts, NASA astronomers have developed a cutting-edge impact monitoring algorithm called Sentry-II.

NASA has recently tracked the asteroid and named it 2023 RD15. It will approach Earth today, September 24. Know what else NASA has revealed:

Asteroid 2023 RD15

Asteroid 2023 RD15 is expected to visit our planet today, September 24, according to NASA CNEOS. According to the information provided, this asteroid is the size of a house and has a width of 46 feet. This asteroid was first observed on September 15th and last seen on September 18th.

Other details

The space organization NASA has revealed that Asteroid 2023 RD15 is classified in the Aten group of asteroids. These are Near-Earth Asteroids (NEAs) that intersect Earth’s orbit and have semimajor axes smaller than Earth’s. The name “Aten” comes from the asteroid 2062 Aten, the first such asteroid discovered by American astronomer Eleanor Helin at the Palomar Observatory on January 7, 1976. Its closest approach to Earth is estimated to be 1.43 million kilometers. It accelerates towards the Earth at a speed of 17917 kilometers per hour.

Is asteroid 2023 RD15 a potential threat?

According to NASA, asteroid 2023 RD15 is not potentially dangerous to our planet due to its size. Space rocks larger than 492 feet are considered potentially hazardous by NASA.
