Prepare To Pay Hefty Penalties On Highways As Government Introduces AI Cameras
If you think highway cameras are just for checking speed, think again. The government may soon introduce cameras equipped with artificial intelligence to detect visible traffic violations. With the help of artificial intelligence, optical fiber cable (OFC) infrastructure and 5G communication, the government plans to enforce strict traffic rules on highways. While you may think you can get away with driving in the wrong lane right now, very soon the resulting fines can add up.
The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has released its updated policy to adopt the updated and forward-looking Advanced Traffic Management System (ATMS) standards and specifications 2023. The government is heavily relying on artificial intelligence (AI) to enforce and improve traffic rules. road safety.
As for the new policy, NHAI is considering replacing the existing VIDS cameras with the newly introduced Video Incident Detection and Enforcement System (VIDES). So what’s so special about VIDES? Well, the new system can detect 14 different incidents, including triple riding, helmet and seat belt violations, driving in the wrong lane or direction, animals on the highway, and pedestrian crossings.
“Depending on the event detected, VIDES will alert route patrol vehicles or ambulances, generate electronic challenges, relay alerts to nearby variable message boards or send notifications through the Rajmargyatra mobile app to nearby passengers,” according to the ministry’s statement. Road traffic and motorways.
These cameras are to be installed every 10 km along the national highways, with command and control centers every 100 km to connect the various camera feeds. “Furthermore, the Vehicle Speed Detection System (VSDS) is now integrated into VIDES, optimizing the use of Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras,” the statement added.
In addition to this, the traffic surveillance camera system (TMCS) is also being updated. Cameras placed every kilometer along the highway are equipped with advanced features such as automatic detection of accidents and stopped vehicles.
