Report Shows Decline in Popularity of ‘X’ Following Elon Musk’s Twitter Takeover
In September, traffic on X (formerly Twitter) fell from 6.4 billion to 5.8 billion, a 10 percent loss, according to new SamanWeb data. X has now dropped to seventh in the global ranking behind Instagram. Of the 176 countries that visited Twitter in September, 83% saw a month-over-month decrease in visits. It’s startling to see a drop in traffic from hundreds of countries, and may well be Twitter’s behind-the-scenes efforts to combat bots .However, as Musk has recently said that the $1 fee may be “the only way to fight bots”, it seems likely that users will be locked out of the platform,” a spokesperson for Venture Smarter.
An analysis of similar Web data reveals that 5.8 billion users visited the social network in September 2023. Visits are down 10% compared to August, from 6.4 billion.
Venture Smarter’s analysis reveals that X has now dropped to seventh in the US rankings behind Instagram. Further analysis reveals of the 176 countries that used Twitter in September, more than four-fifths (83%) experienced a monthly decline in website traffic.
Twitter’s global searches have fallen since Elon Musk took over in September 2022, from 14 million monthly searches to 11 million a year later, the lowest number since November 2018, according to Google data.
Elon Musk, CEO of X, announced his plan to charge new users $1 a year to access the platform to combat fake bot accounts, which is currently being trialled in two countries.
