Trial of Instagram’s Multi-User Carousel Posting Function Launched
Instagram has recently been placing emphasis on collaborative functionalities. Initially, they introduced Remix on Reels, enabling users to react and contribute to a Reel with a simple click, akin to TikTok’s offering. Subsequently, the platform introduced Collab Posts, allowing a post to have a co-author and be visible on both users’ accounts. Expanding on these efforts, Instagram is currently experimenting with a new feature that permits a user’s followers to contribute photos and videos to a carousel.
Adam Mosseri revealed the feature on both Instagram Broadcast and Threads, where he said: “A new test on Instagram. We just started testing a new way to invite friends to join your feed. Before you post the carousel, you can give your followers the option to submit photos and/or videos that you can accept to add to the post . Excited about all the creative possibilities this opens up. Let us know if you think you’ll try this.”

Instagram is testing a collaboration carousel
From the post it looks like Followers can’t be added to a post by default. The user must first approve it when the request to send a photo or video is sent. The image shared by Mosser shows an “Add to post” button, confirming that this will be the case.
Does this mean that the carousels will be increased from the current maximum size of 10 posts? We’re not sure yet. But given that a message can now have multiple collaborators, it makes sense to add a playground. In addition, it will also be interesting to see if each post shows separately who added it to the carousel for others, or if their name is added to the post like Collab posts.
With Mosseri revealing that the goal of Threads is to make it a “de facto platform for public conversations online,” it seems that Instagram’s playbook is to encourage interaction with followers and friends through various social collaboration projects.
