Apple Watch 2024 To Feature Blood Pressure Monitoring and Sleep Apnea Detection

Apple is said to be bringing new features like blood pressure monitoring and sleep apnea detection to the redesigned Apple Watch in 2024.

According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple’s blood pressure sensor technology coming next year will include blood pressure detection. The system is designed only to tell the user if their blood pressure is rising and to provide a diary where the user can write down what happened when the hypertension occurred.

“To avoid misdiagnosis, the feature directs the user to talk to a doctor or check their blood pressure with a traditional cuff, which can provide accurate systolic and diastolic measurements,” the report states.

According to Gurman, the Apple Watch in 2024 will also have a sleep apnea detection feature. Based on sleep and breathing patterns, it assesses whether someone has an illness and then directs users to a doctor.

Reports have also suggested that the Cupertino-based tech giant is also working on non-invasive blood sugar monitoring. Apple’s system is said to use a silicon photonic chip to shine light from a laser under the skin to determine glucose levels in the body.

Glucose monitoring is designed similarly to the blood pressure system, as it currently tracks a person’s blood sugar and warns users of pre-diabetes rather than providing an actual blood glucose reading, MacRumors reports. However, Apple’s blood sugar tracking efforts likely won’t appear in the product for at least a few years, Gurman said.

In related news, a Bloomberg report also revealed that Apple wanted to make the Apple Watch compatible with Android phones, but the company had pulled the plug on that support at the last minute. Bringing the Apple Watch to Android would have opened up a whole new market for the company, where you have billions of smartphones.
