Unlock the Power of AI with Google’s Teen-Friendly Bard!

Starting from this Thursday, Google is allowing teenagers to interact with Bard, the AI chatbot. In a recent blog post, Google explains that they have established certain measures to guarantee a safe and educational encounter for young users. Bard will be available to teenagers in “most countries globally,” as long as they meet Google’s minimum age requirement of 13 to independently manage their accounts. Exceptions to this rule can be found in a support document.

Google’s Commitment to Teen Safety

Initially available in English, Google plans to expand Bard’s language options “over time” to serve a diverse audience. To improve security, Google has implemented several measures to introduce teenagers to generative AI concepts and protect them from inappropriate content.

As part of the adoption process, Google is sharing educational resources, including a video that provides a concise overview of generative AI and its potential pitfalls, such as hallucinations. When teenagers ask fact-based questions, the company deploys a double-check feature that compares Bard’s answers to Google search results.

Bard security features

In addition, Google has equipped Bard with the ability to identify content inappropriate for younger users and implemented security features that prevent illegal or age-restricted content from being shown to teenagers, ensuring a safe browsing experience.

In addition to security improvements, Google is introducing new features to Bard that will benefit not only teenagers but all users. For example, when users enter a math equation or upload a picture of it, Bard provides a step-by-step explanation of how to solve the problem, furthering its usefulness as a valuable homework tool. Additionally, Bard can create graphs from tables or data at the prompt.

Project Bard, announced by Google in February, has come a long way since its limited early access launch in the US and UK. Now available in more than 230 countries and territories, Bard has evolved with additional features as Google competes with other chatbots such as Microsoft’s Copilot and OpenAI’s ChatGPT.

Focused on safety, education and enhancements, Google’s Bard aims to provide a positive and enriching experience for teenagers and users around the world to learn and benefit from.
