Microsoft Welcomes Sam Altman and Greg Brockman to AI Research Team – Satya Nadella Confirms!
Sam Altman, former CEO of OpenAI, Greg Brockman, co-founder of OpenAI, and some of their colleagues have joined Microsoft to lead a new “advanced AI research group” after OpenAI’s board fired the former. This development comes after Emmett Shear, the former CEO of Twitch, was named OpenAI’s interim CEO and OpenAI’s board refused to comply with Altman’s ultimatum.

“We’re very excited to share the news that Sam Altman and Greg Brockman, along with their colleagues, are joining Microsoft to lead a new advanced AI research group,” Satya Nadella wrote on X (Twitter). “We look forward to moving quickly to provide them with the resources they need to succeed,” he added.
Additionally, with Satya Nadella officially confirming that Emmett Shear will lead OpenAI indefinitely, Mira Murati, who also became interim CEO after Sam Altman was fired, will no longer serve in the role. That means OpenAI will see its third CEO in three days.
Satya Nadella also mentioned that Microsoft will continue to work with OpenAI and that the tech giant is looking forward to working on the product roadmap revealed during Microsoft Ignite.
Update: Nadella, who answered to Sam Altman at X, confirmed that Altman will lead Microsoft’s new AI group as CEO. In doing so, he compared the new “group” to Microsoft’s existing properties, including LinkedIn, Mojang Studios and GitHub. This new unit from Microsoft doesn’t have a name yet, but given the company’s focus on artificial intelligence, it’s likely to become the main focus of the Redmond-based giant.
