Twitter will open source the code used to recommend tweets on March 31, Musk says
Twitter CEO Elon Musk announced Friday that the microblogging site will soon open source all the code the social media giant uses to recommend tweets.
“Twitter will open source all code used to recommend tweets on March 31st,” Musk tweeted.
In a later tweet, he said Twitter’s “algorithm” is too complex and not fully understood internally, adding that “people notice a lot of stupid things, but we fix problems as soon as we find them.”
He also said Twitter is working on a simplified approach to serving up more engaging tweets, but it’s still a work in progress.
“Providing code transparency is incredibly awkward at first, but should lead to a rapid improvement in the quality of recommendations. Most importantly, we hope to earn your trust,” Musk said.
This announcement is in line with Musk’s promise to restore free speech and prevent the platform from descending into a “hellscape.”
Since Elon Musk took over the company last year, the app has been at the center of several debates about free speech and transparency.
Musk has proposed the idea for the open-source Twitter algorithm even before he bought the platform in October of last year. Last month, he announced plans to open source the algorithm.
According to a TechCrunch report, Twitter’s open-source algorithm could also keep lawmakers and regulators at bay despite the functionality of the social media platform’s content recommendations.
Last year, former Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey stated that Twitter should have been developed as an open protocol. He shared the same idea with Musk via text messages, the report added.
