Insomniac Games Studio, Owned by Sony, Falls Victim to Hacking: Wolverine Gameplay and Employee Data Leaked on Darknet!
Earlier this month, it was reported that Insomniac Games, Sony’s first-party studio behind games such as Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 and Ratchet and Clank, was hacked. The hackers demanded a whopping $2 million ransom to refrain from handing over the stolen data.
As reported by CyberDaily, the group responsible, called the Ryhsida ransomware gang, has now released a total of 1.67 terabytes containing 1.3 million files because the condition is not met. This information includes gameplay clips of the upcoming Marvel’s Wolverine game for PS5, the studio’s future plans until 2023, and even several core resources on the dark web.
The publication also states that the leaked materials include not only Wolverine’s level design and character models, but also internal company documents such as HR I-9 work forms, termination documents and even content from employees’ computers.
CyberDaily also caught up with the hackers themselves to get their perspective. “Yes, we knew who we were attacking,” Cyber Daily quoted Rhysida’s spokesperson as saying. “We knew that developers who make games like this would be an easy target,” the spokesperson added.
In addition, the hackers told the publication that Insomniac’s systems were relatively easy to break into. “We got the domain admin within 20-25 minutes of the network being breached,” they said.
It remains to be seen how Sony will proceed in the future, given that creating first-party exclusives like Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 and upcoming releases like Marvel’s Wolverine and Marvel’s Venom is its core strength and hacks and leaks. this can seriously harm the authors.
It’s worth noting that this isn’t the first time a game developer has been hacked. Last year, before the release of the official GTA 6 trailer, hours of GTA 6 footage was leaked, featuring the game and the game’s setting, Vice City. This caused huge outrage online and Rockstar was finally forced to admit that the hack was real.
