Google cuts hundreds of jobs in ad team restructuring

Google, owned by Alphabet, has announced that it will be reducing its global ad team by “a few hundred” positions as it aims to enhance efficiency and creativity through the use of artificial intelligence. The company plans to focus on providing improved support for small and medium-sized businesses advertising on its platform by making job cuts to its “large customer” sales team.

The company expected the expansion of Google’s small business advertising teams to boost hiring this year.

Google did not mention generative AI, which is disrupting many industries, including advertising.

Last week, Google’s cloud computing unit unveiled new AI tools to help retailers “personalize online stores, modernize operations and transform in-store technology adoption.”

Google cited research showing that about 80 percent of U.S. retailers consider it urgent to implement generative AI in their operations.

“In just a year, generative AI has gone from a barely recognized concept to one of the fastest-moving features in all of technology and a critical part of many retailers’ goals,” Carrie Tharp, vice president of strategic industries at Google Cloud, said in the release. .

New Google AI tools allow retailers to easily embed virtual agents on websites or mobile apps to provide personalized assistance and recommendations to shoppers, according to the release.

Google’s artificial intelligence will also begin to analyze product images and produce product descriptions or terms suitable for optimizing discoveries in online searches, the company said.

This time last year, Google laid off about 12,000 people, about six percent of its workforce, due to inflation and rising interest rates.

The Silicon Valley company has since invested heavily in generative artificial intelligence.
